Summary

Kamaitachi no Yoru Advance is a text‑driven adventure on the GBA that brings the renowned Kamaitachi mystery series to a handheld format. Chunsoft packed the visual‑novel experience into a cartridge, letting players flip through illustrated passages and choose from limited options that branch toward multiple endings.

The game relies almost entirely on written dialogue and static backgrounds, with only occasional spriting animation to highlight key moments.

Released only in Japan on June 28 2002, it never saw an official Western localization, making original copies a collector’s curiosity for fans of story‑heavy titles.

Even without voice acting, the mood is conveyed through atmospheric music and the distinctive, eerie art style that Chunsoft cultivated in its earlier mystery titles.

Storyline

Kamaitachi no Yoru Advance follows university student Toru (named Max in the English version) and his girlfriend Mari (Grace) as they head to the Spool pension in Nagano for a ski trip. A fierce blizzard strands them with a cast of oddball guests—including part‑timers Toshio and Midori, office workers Kanako, Aki and Keiko, a Kansai boss and his wife, photographer Yosuke, and the mysterious sunglasses‑wearing Ichiro Tanaka. After dinner, a handwritten note in the office workers' room warns, “Tonight, 12 o’clock, someone will die,” but it is dismissed as a prank. At nine p.m. the sound of shattered glass leads the group upstairs, where they discover Tanaka’s dismembered body and a broken window, yet no sign of a killer. Cut off by the storm, with phone lines down and mobile service unavailable, the lodge becomes a locked‑room mystery. Determined to keep Mari safe, Toru takes on the investigation, hunting the invisible threat that may be a local yokai or a human murderer.
