Summary
Jet Grind Radio brought the kinetic rush of the Dreamcast hit onto the handheld in an unexpected isometric package. Vicarious Visions re‑imagined the 3‑D world as a crisp 2‑D canvas that mimics the original’s cel‑shaded vibe, borrowing the same engine that powered their Tony Hawk GBA ports. The game lets you zip across rails, pull off tricks, and spray graffiti on key spots; a built‑in editor even lets you design your own tags and expand the library by finding hidden icons.
Finishing a neighborhood’s story unlocks three time‑attack challenges—full‑city tagging, racing, and trick‑focused runs—while a four‑player mode pits friends against each other in those same contests. Soundtrack wise, only eight tracks survive from the Dreamcast score, each clipped to short looping bursts that still capture the funky vibe.
Critics largely embraced the effort: Metacritic posted a 74‑score, GameSpot praised the faithful translation, and IGN named it a runner‑up for June 2003’s Game of the Month despite some control quirks. Fans of the original feel a nostalgic punch, even on the modest GBA screen.
Storyline
In the Game Boy Advance version of Jet Grind Radio (often called Jet Set Radio), you play as a member of the GG's, a graffiti‑spraying crew led by Beat, the first character you can control. The Rokkaku Group has teamed up with the Tokyo‑to government to crush the "Rudies," the game’s slang for rebellious teens. Your mission is simple yet frantic: tag designated spots around the city with vibrant graffiti before the timer runs out or the relentless police force arrives. Each successful tag earns respect and pushes the gang’s reputation higher, while evading the indomitable array of cops adds a pulse‑pounding chase element. The street‑level showdown between youthful expression and corporate authority drives the entire storyline.
