Summary
Iridion 3D launched with the Game Boy Advance, yanking you from the edge of Earth’s atmosphere into the heart of an alien star system over seven massive stages. The forward‑scrolling rail shooter feels like a handheld Star Fox, using only the directional pad, A and Start, while the ship cruises at a fixed speed. Five weapon types can be powered up in three levels, and collecting different colored pickups swaps to a fresh weapon, adding strategy to the chaos. Boss encounters shift to a static 360‑degree view where a single flashing vulnerability must be hammered, rewarding precise timing. Under the hood, Shin’en faked 3D by scaling 2D sprites in real time and squeezed extra graphic fidelity into the cartridge with the GAX sound engine, delivering crisp music and visuals rarely seen on a handheld at the time.
Storyline
In Iridion 3D, humanity faces a force unleashed far beyond the darkest limits of the Orion Nebula, racing toward Earth. The player pilots the experimental SHN fighter, the lone hope against the alien Iridion onslaught. The opening cinematic shows Earth suddenly bombarded, surface taken, orbital mines and Pacific‑Ocean bombs deployed. Your mission is to blaze a trail across light‑years of uncharted space and defend mankind’s destiny.
The early stages keep you over the devastated planet: you fight through a garbage tunnel, shred the Iridion fleet in the Pacific, and break the orbital blockade surrounding Earth. A moon‑based boss caps the stratospheric assault before the invasion fleet collapses. With the home front secured, you launch deeper into the cosmos toward the Iridion star system. There you crush a mining colony hidden in an asteroid belt.
Finally you breach the Iridion home world and destroy its central mainframe, eradicating the alien menace once and for all. The journey spans from Earth’s stratosphere to the far reaches of the galaxy, delivering a relentless space‑shooter experience. Victory rests in the palm of your hands.
