Summary

The Hobbit on Game Boy Advance drops you into an isometric three‑quarter view that feels surprisingly spacious for a handheld platformer. I spend most of my time guiding Bilbo across rope‑swinging vines, climbing ladders and leaping between ledges while hunting down the quests that unlock each new area.

Combat is simple but gets a nice boost from magical scrolls that upgrade Bilbo’s walking stick, thrown stones and his later‑acquired dagger, Sting. The One Ring pops up for brief moments of invisibility, letting you slip past tougher foes. Health is tracked with a "Courage Meter" – three points at the start, and every thousand Courage Points (collected as colored diamonds) adds another.

Between battles, the game sprinkles chests that range from instant opens to up to eight‑step lock‑picking minigames, with penalties like damage or poison for a mis‑step. Skeleton keys skip the hassle, while the vendor at each chapter’s end trades silver pennies for stones, potions, antidotes and extra inventory slots.

Sierra’s GBA version leans more into stealth than its console counterpart, echoing the novel’s quieter moments. IGN praised the graphics as impressive for the system, even if the sheer number of quests can feel a bit trivial at times.

Storyline

The wizard Gandalf arrives in the Shire and convinces the reluctant hobbit Bilbo Baggins to join thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug. Their journey takes them from the peaceful Hobbit‑hole in Hobbiton through the Misty Mountains, where goblins attack and Bilbo discovers a mysterious ring and meets Gollum, and then on to the dark Mirkwood forest. After being rescued by eagles, the party is captured by Wood Elves, but Bilbo uses the ring’s power and the aid of the injured elf Lianna to free the dwarves and escape to Lake‑town, where Bard kills Smaug.

In Lake‑town Bilbo befriends Bard, the town guard captain, and later sneaks out of the Lonely Mountain with the priceless Arkenstone, offering it to Bard in hopes of averting a war over the treasure. Thorin refuses, denouncing Bilbo as a traitor, and the five armies—men, elves, dwarves, goblins and wargs—clash in a massive battle that ends with the goblins defeated and a fragile peace among the survivors. Mortally wounded, Thorin reconciles with Bilbo before dying, and the heroes return to the Shire, bringing the tale of their harrowing adventure to an end.

The Hobbit no Bouken (Caravan) lets players control Bilbo as he travels from Hobbiton through Mirkwood to the Lonely Mountain, gathering items, knowledge and courage while confronting elves, trolls, orcs, spiders and wolves along the way.
