Shu Takumi and a tiny team of seven spent just ten months turning a planned Game Boy Color detective game into the courtroom drama we know, inspired by a glimpse of the GBA’s screen and Mega Man Battle Network footage. To keep the experience approachable, they stripped the design down so anyone could jump in, even providing their own voice clips—Takumi himself voiced Phoenix, while Masakazu Sugimori and Tatsuro Iwamoto took von Karma and Edgeworth.

The soundtrack is a hidden gem: composer Masakazu Sugimori fought the GBA’s limited hardware by using PCM instead of a simple PSG, blending jazz‑fusion, classical, J‑pop and ’80s rock into tracks like “Investigation ~ Opening 2001” and “Phoenix Wright ~ Objection 2001”. Those melodies still echo whenever I replay the investigation sections.

Storyline

In the Game Boy Advance version of Gyakuten Saiban, known in the West as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, rookie defender Phoenix Wright takes on his first case defending childhood friend Larry Butz, accused of murdering his girlfriend Cindy Stone. With guidance from his mentor Mia Fey, Phoenix uncovers that the prosecution’s eyewitness, Frank Sahwit, is the true killer, leading to Mia’s own murder and Maya Fey’s arrest.

Maya, a spirit‑medium in training, joins Phoenix as his new assistant. Together they expose blackmailer Redd White as the culprit behind Mia’s death, only for Phoenix to be framed for murder himself. Maya channels Mia’s spirit, forcing White to confess and clearing Phoenix’s name.

Later, Phoenix defends actor Will Powers in a case involving the death of co‑star Jack Hammer, reveals producer Dee Vasquez’s involvement, and finally helps clear Edgeworth of a murder charge by exposing Manfred von Karma’s long‑standing vendetta.
