Summary
Gunstar Super Heroes (known as Gunstar Future Heroes in Europe) feels like a love letter to the original 1993 classic while pushing the run‑and‑gun formula onto the Game Boy Advance. The sequel drops the old Free/Fixed shot distinction, giving both Red and Blue identical, more versatile controls, and replaces the throw mechanic with a suite of melee attacks that blend the A and B buttons with the D‑pad. Instead of swapping weapons on the fly, you now pick from three weapon types at any moment, and a supercharge meter builds as you blast foes, unleashing a powerful attack when it fills. Critics almost universally praised the title, even crowning it “Best GBA Game of E3 2005,” yet sales stayed modest. Nintendo Power repeatedly urged players to pick it up, lamenting its absence from the top‑selling GBA charts.
Storyline
Gunstar Future Heroes (Rising Sun), sometimes referred to as Gunstar Super Heroes, picks up after the original Gunstar Heroes’ climax where the God of Ruin—also called Golden Silver—was destroyed. The blast shattered the planet’s sky, leaving four moons in orbit, and a later fifth moon signals a plot to bring the malevolent Empire and Golden Silver back.
The new Gunstars—Red, Blue and Yellow—join the secretive Third Eye organization to hunt down the five moons, stop the Empire’s resurrection, and reclaim the four Treasure Gems that powered the previous saga. Red and Blue carry the names of the legendary heroes from the first game, while Yellow rounds out the trio.
Story paths diverge depending on the chosen difficulty and which character you play, and most cast members echo their originals—except Red, who is now a female warrior, a notable change from the male Red of the original title.
