Summary

Ghost Rider on the Game Boy Advance drops you into a gritty, supernatural beat‑em‑up that feels like a mash‑up of God of War’s combo‑heavy combat and the motorcycle chaos of Road Rash. You swing Ghost Rider’s demonic chain on foot, chain‑linking enemies while absorbing flame from occasional fire‑drums to refill health, and you can hop onto the Hellcycle for high‑speed sections where you still unleash chain attacks and shoot hellfire. The game also pulls in a Castlevania vibe with its platforming challenges and hidden secrets.

Beyond the main hero, the title lets you unlock alternate skins—Classic Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider 2099, Vengeance, and even Blade the vampire hunter. Choosing Blade reshapes the experience: he fights solely with his Daywalker Sword, can drain life from non‑boss foes, and loses Ghost Rider’s shotgun and chain moves, though his bike still fires firebolts. Villains from the film and comics, like Scarecrow, Deathwatch and Lilith, pepper the levels, keeping the action fresh.

Critics were split: the GBA version earned mixed or average scores, praised for its ambitious blend of hack‑and‑slash and racing, but also faulted for rough controls and repetitive design. The game’s ambitious scope makes it a quirky footnote in the era’s licensed titles.

Storyline

Mephisto orders Vengeance to capture Ghost Rider, and Vengeance snags Johnny on his Hellcycle, opening a fiery portal in mid‑air. Enraged, Johnny transforms into the Rider, reaches the Gates of Hell, but Mephisto blocks his escape and warns that his own demons are leaking onto Earth, threatening an apocalypse.

Mephisto claims the escaping demons could force the Angels to overrun his realm, so he recruits the Rider. Johnny initially refuses, but when Vengeance is sent to kill Roxanne Simpson, Blaze kills Vengeance and Johnny agrees to help. He returns to Earth, heads to San Venganza, battles Lilith, her demon sons, Dark Heart monsters and other escaped demons, ultimately slaying Lilith while some Lilin flee with Blackheart’s body.

The Caretaker/Phantom Rider arrives with the dhampir hunter Blade, informing Johnny that Blackout has teamed with Deathwatch to steal military hardware. Johnny defeats Blackout, and Blade secures Blackheart’s corpse.

Scarecrow kidnaps Roxanne; after rescuing her, Ghost Rider is led to the carnival where his father died and meets Mephisto, who reveals he has been manipulating the Rider all along.

Mephisto’s true aim was to use the Rider’s hellfire to carve a massive geoglyph that would open a portal to Hell and trigger the Apocalypse. Blackheart’s body reawakens, grows immensely powerful, but Johnny defeats it. Mephisto vanishes with Blackheart’s remains, and Johnny reunites with Roxanne.
