Summary
Famicom Mini: Takahashi Meijin no Bouken-jima landed on the Game Boy Advance in 2004 as a Japan‑only entry in Nintendo’s Famicom Mini series. The cartridge is essentially Hudson Soft’s classic 1986 platformer Adventure Island, originally an adaptation of Sega’s Wonder Boy arcade hit. Because it never saw a North American or European release, the GBA version remains a hidden gem for collectors.
The game revolves around Higgins, whose health bar starts at eleven points and drains over time or whenever he trips, but can be boosted up to sixteen by gathering fruit or milk bottles. A trusty stone axe doubles as a ranged fireball when traded with a special merchant, allowing players to blast rocks and rolling stones. Secret pots tucked into hard‑to‑reach corners double the stage‑end bonus, and the honey‑glowing “Honey Girl” fairies grant temporary invincibility. These quirky mechanics make the portable version feel fresh even after decades of play.
Storyline
In Famicom Mini: Takahashi Meijin no Bouken-jima (known abroad as Adventure Island), the player takes control of Master Higgins, called Takahashi Meijin in the Japanese version. He hears that an Evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Princess Tina and heads to the South Pacific’s Adventure Island.
The quest spans 32 stages arranged into eight areas, each area containing four rounds and four checkpoints. After completing the fourth round, Higgins faces a boss before moving on. Defeating the final boss and rescuing the princess completes the game.
