Summary
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku (often just called The Legacy of Goku) packs a surprisingly deep action‑RPG experience onto the Game Boy Advance. You swing with the A button for punches and kicks, then tap B to unleash ki blasts, solar flares or a classic Kamehameha, while the L button lets you cycle through the growing list of energy attacks you learn along the way.
The game sticks to a single protagonist – Goku – and rewards you with experience points for every foe you defeat. Those points level you up, boost your stats, and gradually refill the energy gauge that powers your special moves, encouraging a balance between raw melee and strategic ki usage.
Despite its modest scope, the title resonated with fans, pulling in 1.2 million copies and $35 million in U.S. sales by August 2006, eventually reaching 1.4 million units. Critics were split, giving it mixed reviews on Metacritic, but the blend of familiar Dragon Ball combat and RPG progression still makes it a nostalgic highlight for handheld gamers.
Storyline
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku (often just called Legacy of Goku) puts players in the shoes of Goku as he races to rescue his kidnapped son and stop the tyrant Frieza from destroying the universe. The adventure spans iconic locations on Earth and the distant planet Namek, and along the way Goku meets allies such as Vegeta, Krillin, Piccolo and King Kai.
Throughout the game Goku is the sole playable character, gaining experience by defeating foes and completing simple missions. The final stage culminates in Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation, a landmark moment that lets him finally defeat Frieza. The title also broke new ground on the Game Boy Advance by including full‑motion video, predating the later GBA Video releases.
