Summary

Digimon Adventure, often just called Digimon, is a curious bootleg platformer that shows up on both the SNES and Game Boy Advance. It runs on the same engine as Pocket Monster, so the controls feel oddly familiar – you press A to launch Agumon’s fireball and navigate six distinct stages, two of which end in boss battles.

The only character you can play is Agumon, but each level hides a strawberry that upgrades him into Greymon, granting a noticeably larger and more powerful fireball. If you run out of lives, the game offers a continue option that never seems to run out, making the challenge feel more like a marathon than a sprint.

Visually and aurally, the title is a patchwork of other games: the final battle’s backdrop is lifted straight from Castlevania: Dracula X, while the sound engine and music are ripped from Bonkers on the SNES – the same audio code that appears in Pocket Monster and the Pokémon Gold/Silver releases.
