Summary
Defender of the Crown hit the Game Boy Advance as part of a long‑run of ports that carried the game from its groundbreaking 1986 Amiga debut to a handheld format. While the GBA iteration didn’t receive a detailed technical breakdown, it retained the title’s hallmark painted‑style graphics that earned rave reviews for visual ambition in the original release. The game’s cover art—a vivid composition assembled by Peter Green Design and painted by Ezra Tucker—still frames the experience, even on a small screen, and the handheld version lets players tap into the same medieval strategy of sieges, duels, and kingdom management that defined the series.
Even decades later the title is remembered for pushing graphical standards and selling over a million copies across its many incarnations. Its move to the GBA kept that legacy alive for portable gamers, cementing Defender of the Crown as a classic that bridges console nostalgia and handheld convenience.
Storyline
Set in England in the year 1149, Defender of the Crown opens after the king’s death and throws the realm into a scramble for power. Players choose one of four Saxon champions—Wilfred of Ivanhoe, Cedric of Rotherwood, Geoffrey Longsword, or Wolfric the Wild—and must push back the invading Norman hordes while uniting a fractured England.
The campaign revolves around conquering every province, even those held by rival Saxon lords who can turn hostile. Success comes from raising armies, laying siege to or looting enemy castles, and proving skill in periodic jousting tournaments. Occasionally a damsel in distress needs rescuing, and the legendary outlaw Robin Hood can be summoned for extra aid.
