Summary
The GBA version of Crash Nitro Kart manages to capture the frantic fun of kart racing despite the handheld’s limits. Vicarious Visions leaned on a Mode 7 engine for the first time on the system, delivering sharp, colorful tracks that feel surprisingly deep for a 13‑track roster. Each character’s kart is tuned differently—some favor raw speed, others excel at acceleration or handling—so I often pick a light, spry driver when I want to weave through tight corners, or a heavy, fast one for straight‑line bursts.
The control scheme is simple yet rewarding: accelerate, brake, hop, and grab power‑ups, with the hop button doubling as a drift trigger. Holding hop while turning fills a boost gauge, and timing the release for a red flash launches a turbo; skilled players can chain up to three boosts in a row. Collecting Wumpa fruit nudges the top speed higher and amps up weapon strength, while item boxes dispense bombs, homing missiles, shields, tornadoes, and extra turbo boosts—many of which can be fired forward, backward, or even launched as missiles.
Beyond the core races, the game offers a hub‑based single‑player adventure where you chase trophies, relics, tokens, and crystals, choosing between Crash’s team or Cortex’s side. Arcade and time‑trial modes let you race solo or record passwords to upload scores to Vicarious Visions’ site. Four‑player link‑cable races feel chaotic and fun, and a GameCube‑GBA link unlocks hidden characters and a secret minigame. Reviewers praised the solid mechanics, power‑slide system, and vivid visuals, though they noted occasional slowdown during hectic moments, which can throw off boost timing. Overall, Crash Nitro Kart on the GBA stands out as a competent, replay‑rich kart racer that holds its own against console counterparts.
Storyline
Crash Nitro Kart drops Crash Bandicoot, his friends, Doctor Neo Cortex and his minions into a mysterious light that whisks them to the coliseum of Emperor Velo XXVII, ruler of a distant galaxy. Velo forces them into his Galactic Circuit, promising freedom if they win and threatening Earth’s destruction if they refuse.
The circuit spans four worlds—Terra, Barin, Fenomena, and Teknee—where each team must defeat the local champion and claim a Galactic Key. On Terra they beat Krunk, on Barin they outpace the cyber‑shark Nash, on Fenomena they overcome the split‑form racer Norm, and on Teknee they topple the perfectionist robot Geary, gathering all four keys.
With the keys in hand the racers face Velo in a final showdown. If Team Bandicoot wins, they are hailed as the first victors, offered Velo’s empire, but they decline and return to Earth to relax on a beach. If Team Cortex wins, he snatches Velo’s scepter only to be mis‑sent back to Terra, surrounded by Krunk’s species and far from home. Adventure mode follows this story as Crash and the gang race to save Earth.
