Summary

Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure (known as Crash Bandicoot XS in Europe) feels like a portable slice of the classic PlayStation platforming, but with a GBA twist that lets me zip between side‑scrolling stages, pseudo‑3D chase runs, and even aerial dogfights. The game is built around four hub worlds, each unlocking five crystal‑filled levels and a boss; beating a boss opens the next hub, and collecting all 20 crystals restores the Earth’s size. Along the way I can chase Time Trials, smash crates for Gems, and hunt Colored Gems that hide secret areas, while the familiar spin, body‑slam and slide moves grow stronger after each boss defeat. Vicarious Visions packed roughly 1,500 animation frames into the sprite and used a battery‑backed save system, avoiding the clunky passwords of older handheld titles. Critics praised the fluid graphics—often called superior to SNES fare—and the clear, faithful audio, though they noted the lack of major innovations and occasional slippery controls. Still, the game sold 750,000 copies in the U.S., ranking among the top GBA sellers and proving that Crash could thrive far from the PlayStation console.

Storyline

In Crash Bandicoot – The Huge Adventure, the nefarious Dr. Neo Cortex activates his Planetary Minimizer and shrinks the entire Earth down to the size of a wumpa fruit. Crash Bandicoot is tasked by his sister Coco to recover scattered Crystals so she can power a device that will restore the planet to its proper size. As Crash battles Cortex’s henchmen—Dingodile, N. Gin and Tiny—he gathers the needed Crystals while the space‑station above Earth looms ominously. Cortex attempts to fire the Minimizer at Crash, but Crash tricks him into shrinking the colored Gems that stabilize the weapon, causing it to malfunction and fuse the villains into the monstrous Mega‑Mix. Crash escapes back to the shrunken world just in time for Coco to use the collected Crystals, returning Earth to normal as the space station explodes, while Cortex flees in an escape pod.
