Summary

Comix Zone feels like stepping into a hand‑drawn superhero comic, thanks to the original artwork that actually graces the screen. As Sketch Turner, you punch, kick, and even fling paper planes ripped from the page, while the villain Mortus literally sketches fresh foes to block your escape. The game’s six comic‑book pages are split into three themed episodes, each a chain of panels that blend beat‑’em‑up action with occasional puzzles and branching routes.

The GBA version, released only in Europe in 2002, had to shrink the visual playground to fit the handheld’s smaller screen. That cut down the illusion of being inside the comic, turning the experience into a more conventional side‑scrolling brawler, but the core charm of the comic‑style graphics and quirky items remains. You can carry three items at once, using the rat Roadkill to peel back the page for hidden tools, and only iced tea will actually restore health.

Even with the screen size trimmed, the game still lets you feel the absurdity of fighting your own creations, making every encounter feel like a panel you’ve drawn yourself.

Storyline

Comix Zone takes place inside the very comic book of the same name, a post‑apocalyptic world that includes a ruined New York City, the Himalayas and the atolls of Zealand. The player controls Sketch Turner, a struggling comic writer who dreamed the story into existence, and while he is drawing during a thunderstorm a lightning strike frees the mutant villain Mortus from the pages. Mortus wants a physical body and sends Sketch into the comic, hoping the artist will be killed so the creature can take his form. Inside the comic Sketch meets Alissa Cyan, a defense‑force general who believes he has been sent to save her world, and despite his protests he joins her mission.

The pair battle Mortus’s henchmen across the various panels, eventually reaching a weapons factory on a derelict ship that houses a hidden nuclear device. As Alissa attempts to defuse the bomb, Mortus reappears and throws her into a chamber filling with rising liquid. Sketch defeats Mortus, rescues Alissa and escapes the comic just as the weapon detonates.

Back in reality Alissa enlists, rises to become Chief of Security for the United States, and the comic becomes a best‑selling title, turning Sketch into an overnight celebrity. He and Alissa move in together and live happily.
