Summary
The Game Boy Advance entry, known as Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts in the West and Chō Makaimura R in Japan, is more than a straight port—it’s a full‑blown remake that adds fresh content for veterans and newcomers alike. The standout is the new Arrange Mode, where you can cherry‑pick redesigned stages and re‑imagined bosses drawn from both Ghosts ’n Goblins and Ghouls ’n Ghosts. Your armor choice matters: keeping the bronze armor unlocks one set of challenges, while the golden armor pushes you into a tougher tier of the classic levels. A nice quality‑of‑life tweak is that the Goddess’s Bracelet is handed to you right at the start of Arrange Mode, cutting down on early back‑tracking. The GBA version even made its way onto the Wii U eShop on October 22 2015, and it earned a nod from GameSpot as a contender for their 2002 “Best Port of a 16‑Bit Classic” award.
Storyline
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (known in Japan as Chō Makaimura) follows the knight Arthur on a desperate quest to rescue Princess Guinevere and halt the resurgence of the Ghoul Realm. The kingdom has fallen under a spell cast by Emperor Sardius—called Samael in the Japanese version—who has revived the ghoul-infested world and trapped Guinevere in the Phantom Zone. Arthur must battle through hordes of monsters and defeat the Foul Guardians, only to learn that Sardius cannot be slain without a mysterious relic, the Goddess's Bracelet. In the second playthrough the bracelet is hidden somewhere in the game world, and once Arthur equips it he can finally confront and defeat Sardius, ending the ghoul menace.
