Summary
The Game Boy Advance version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory drops you straight into Tim Burton’s sugary world, complete with most of the film’s original voice talent—except for Johnny Depp, whose iconic Wonka is voiced by James Arnold Taylor. Winifred Phillips’ original score, produced by Winnie Waldron, adds a surprisingly moody, atmospheric backdrop that feels more like a film score than a handheld game.
The adventure begins with a simple tutorial: help Charlie scrape together enough cash for a Wonka Bar and a Golden Ticket, teaching the controls you’ll need later. Inside the factory, Oompa‑Loompas become your crew, each specializing in tasks like harvesting, welding, or wiring, and you issue commands to fix the chaos the other children left behind while dodging rogue robots. Collect scattered candy to keep Charlie’s energy up and push through each level’s specific objectives.
Critics were harsh, citing clunky controls and a brief playtime, with the Detroit Free Press slapping the GBA edition with a one‑star rating for its lack of strategy. Still, reviewers couldn’t ignore the game’s faithful storyline, polished presentation, and especially its standout soundtrack, which earned praise for its atmospheric depth.
Storyline
In the Game Boy Advance title Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the first objective is to help Charlie find enough money to buy a Wonka Bar and win a Golden Ticket. The main portion of the game unfolds inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, where the Oompa‑Loompas guide the player through each level. Charlie must rescue Augustus Gloop from the pipe above the chocolate river, roll Violet Beauregarde to the Juicing Room and juice her, follow Veruca Salt down the chute and save her from the incinerator, and repair the television‑chocolate machine to free a shrunken Mike Teavee. Throughout the adventure the Oompa‑Loompas also work to return the factory to normal by fixing the chaos caused by the greedy children and dealing with rogue robots. Using special candy powers and the help of the Oompa‑Loompas, Charlie overcomes obstacles and enemies to restore order to Willy Wonka’s sugary establishment.
