Summary
When I first heard the *Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance* soundtrack, I noticed Soshiro Hokkai’s name front‑and‑center, with Michiru Yamane adding the extra stage pieces. The team apparently sacrificed musical depth to push the graphics forward, a trade‑off even series veteran Igarashi admitted. Reviewers praised the game’s visual polish, its tight gameplay, and the nostalgic nods to *Symphony of the Night*, but they were far less kind to the music. Critics slammed it as “the worst Castlevania soundtrack,” calling it muddy, plodding and more reminiscent of four‑channel NES tones than a GBA title. GameSpot called the score merely “decent” and “occasionally catchy,” yet still disappointing enough to earn a nomination for “Most Disappointing Game on Game Boy Advance.” IGN echoed the sentiment, noting the music wasn’t as terrible as rumors suggested, but it certainly didn’t match the series’ earlier highs.
Storyline
In Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Juste Belmont – Simon’s descendant – ventures into Dracula’s castle to collect the six relics of the vampire and uncover the mystery behind his childhood friend Lydie’s disappearance. He first encounters Maxim outside the fortress, then enters alone, where Death confirms the castle’s true identity and warns of its split‑layered nature.
Inside, Juste repeatedly meets a dazed Maxim whose memory flickers as two spirits battle for control: Maxim’s original self and an evil echo forged from Dracula’s remains and jealous envy of Juste. Death explains the dual layers, and Maxim hands Juste his bracelet to help locate Lydie. As Juste gathers the scattered remains, he confronts both Maxim’s possession and the looming threat of Dracula himself.
The game offers three endings. In the first, a possessed Maxim bites Lydie, the castle collapses, and Juste escapes alone, cursing his failure. The second sees Maxim regain enough will to ask Juste to end his life, dying peacefully while Lydie awakens unharmed. The third mirrors the first until Maxim recognizes the bracelet, resists possession, and together they defeat a weakened Dracula, escaping with Lydie as her bite marks vanish.
