Summary
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (often just called Aria of Sorrow) feels like a love letter to the Metroidvania crowd while still pushing the series forward. The standout Tactical Soul system lets you harvest the essence of almost any foe, turning enemies into new weapons, familiars or permanent stat boosts, and the four‑color categorisation (red bullets, blue guardians, yellow enchants) keeps the choices feeling strategic without overwhelming you. I also love that the game rewards cooperation: two cartridges can swap souls via a link cable, a clever nod to the series’ collector mentality.
Beyond the core adventure, the title packs a solid New Game+ that carries over every level, gear and soul, and a hard‑mode for those craving extra challenge. After beating the story you unlock a Boss Rush and a Julius Mode, where you step into the shoes of the Belmont clan’s own Julius and experience the castle from a fresh perspective. The music, a reunion between Michiru Yamane and the team, layers haunting piano with driving rock, giving each area its own memorable theme.
Critically, Aria of Sorrow was hailed as the best Castlevania since Symphony of the Night, and while it stumbled in Japan (just 27,000 units in the first month), it sold over 158,000 copies in the U.S. within three months, cementing its reputation as a handheld classic.
Storyline
In the year 2035, a solar eclipse plunges the world into darkness and a teenage transfer student named Soma Cruz blacks out at the Hakuba shrine. He awakens inside Dracula’s sealed castle, a sprawling labyrinth that has been dormant since the vampire’s defeat in 1999. The castle is filled with monsters and mysterious figures, all drawn by a prophecy that Dracula’s powers will pass to his reincarnation.
Soma discovers he possesses the "power of dominance," allowing him to absorb the souls of monsters and use their abilities. Accompanied initially by his childhood friend Mina Hakuba, he meets a government agent named Genya Arikado, who is later revealed to be Alucard, the son of Dracula. Other allies appear: Yoko Belnades, a witch sent by the Catholic Church; Hammer, a soldier turned vendor; and an amnesiac man known only as J, who is actually Julius Belmont, the hero who vanquished Dracula in 1999.
The main antagonist, missionary Graham Jones, believes he is Dracula’s reincarnation and seeks to claim the vampire’s powers. After a series of confrontations, Soma defeats Graham, absorbs his powers, and learns that he himself is the true reincarnation of Dracula. Julius, recognizing Soma’s struggle against the darkness, promises to end him should he fully become the vampire.
Guided by his allies, Soma enters the Chaotic Realm, battles the manifestation of chaos, and ultimately destroys it. He returns to the Hakuba shrine, where Mina awaits, and the conflict ends with the castle’s darkness sealed once more.
