Summary

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (often just called Aria of Sorrow) pushes the classic side‑scrolling formula into RPG territory with its Tactical Soul system. Defeated foes drop souls that can be absorbed, granting everything from elemental bullets to guardian shields, and the game even lets you trade these abilities via a link‑cable between two GBA cartridges. The depth doesn’t stop there – a full New Game Plus carries over your level, stats and collected souls, while Julius Mode lets you replay the adventure as the alternate protagonist.

The core gameplay feels like a polished Metroidvania: you explore a sprawling castle, swapping between swords, axes, spears and even a handgun, while managing hit points, magic, strength and intelligence. Items and accessories are scavenged from enemies or bought in the shop, and each new ability opens previously locked passages, rewarding careful back‑tracking. The four soul categories – Bullet, Guardian, Enchant and Ability – keep combat fresh and encourage experimentation.

Critically, the title was a surprise hit in the U.S., moving over 158,000 units in its first three months and earning near‑perfect scores from outlets like Famitsu. Reviewers praised its crisp visuals, atmospheric soundtrack and the way the Tactical Soul mechanic reshaped the series, cementing Aria of Sorrow as one of the finest GBA Metroidvanias ever released.

Storyline

The story of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow unfolds in the year 2035, decades after Dracula’s permanent defeat and the sealing of his castle during a solar eclipse. Transfer student Soma Cruz, who lives near the Hakuba shrine, is drawn into the eclipse alongside his childhood friend Mina Hakuba and awakens inside the mysterious castle.

Inside, Soma meets government agent Genya Arikado—who is secretly Alucard—and learns of his "power of dominance," the ability to absorb monster souls. A prophecy foretells that Dracula’s reincarnation will inherit his powers in 2035, prompting characters such as witch Yoko Belnades, the amnesiac J (later revealed as Julius Belmont), soldier‑turned‑vendor Hammer, and missionary Graham Jones, who believes he is Dracula reborn, to converge on the castle.

Soma battles Graham, defeats him, and absorbs his powers, only to discover that he himself is Dracula’s reincarnation. Guided by Arikado, Soma enters the Chaotic Realm to halt the flow of chaos, confronting a manifestation of that chaos while Julius Belmont watches, ready to strike if Soma fully becomes Dracula. After triumph, Yoko, Hammer, Julius and Arikado congratulate him, and Soma awakens back at the Hakuba shrine with Mina, relieved that the conflict has ended.
