Summary

The Game Boy Advance version of Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars feels like a faithful re‑imagining of the 1996 classic, stripped down just enough to fit the handheld’s modest hardware. The biggest shift is the control scheme: instead of point‑and‑click with a mouse, you steer George Stobbart across the screen with the D‑pad and press a button to cycle through highlighted interaction points – a change that reviewers praised as surprisingly smooth for such a small display. To cram the game onto an 8 MB cartridge, the team built a brand‑new engine, compressed the JPEG backgrounds from an uncompressed 7 MB down to under 2 MB, and reduced the palette to 256 colors, which kept the art recognizable despite occasional compression artifacts. The original orchestral score was re‑recorded as MIDI tracks, preserving the iconic melodies while fitting the tight memory budget. Unfortunately, the port isn’t flawless; a notorious glitch can lock the game if you visit Spain before Syria, and the lack of voice acting and reduced audio depth leave the experience feeling a bit hollow compared to the PC original. Still, the clever control redesign, crisp sprites, and the sheer ambition of squeezing a full adventure onto a GBA make this version a noteworthy piece of retro handheld history.

Storyline

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars drops you into the shoes of George Stobbart, a casual diner who witnesses a clown‑triggered bomb explode in a Paris café, killing a man. The sudden tragedy pushes George to team up with investigative journalist Nico Collard as they hunt for the truth behind the attack. Their investigation carries them across France, Spain, Ireland and even Syria, where they encounter a web of characters linked to the murder. Along the way they uncover a hidden Knights Templar conspiracy, learning that the victim was himself a Templar and that an assassin opposed to the order orchestrated the killing. When George finally confronts the Templars, they invite him to join; he refuses and triggers an explosion to escape their ranks.
