Summary

The GBA version of Breath of Fire brings the 1994 classic to a handheld with several conveniences. It's an enhanced port that adds save slots, quick‑save and a dash button for faster movement.

Graphically it tightens the color palette, re‑draws character portraits and revamps the menu to look like Breath of Fire II. The link cable lets two players swap items, something the cartridge never had.

The soundtrack suffers from the switch to the GBA, sounding thinner, but the higher saturation gives a bright new feel. Critics praised the faithful recreation and the added handheld features, though some noted the audio drop.

This version also marks the first official English release in Europe, expanding its reach beyond the original North American translation handled by Square Soft.

Storyline

Breath of Fire (GBA) unfolds in an unnamed medieval fantasy world where humans and anthropomorphic animal clans coexist. Thousands of years ago the goddess Myria split the Dragon Clan into Light and Dark Dragons, and the Light Dragons sealed her away with six magical Goddess Keys scattered across the land. Ryu, a young member of the near‑extinct Light Dragon Clan, lives peacefully in Drogon with his sister Sara, a priestess, until a Dark Dragon raid burns the village and captures Sara.

Determined to rescue her and stop Dark Dragon Emperor Zog from gathering the keys, Ryu journeys across the world, recruiting Nina, Bo, Karn, Gobi, Ox, Mogu and Bleu. Together they retrieve the Earth, Space, Light, Dark, Time and Sky Keys while battling the Four Devas and Zog’s general Jade. After defeating Zog in Scande, Jade forces Sara to hand over the keys and is killed by the party.

The heroes then breach the Obelisk, confront the freed Myria, and Ryu’s dragon power transforms her into a demon before she is slain. With the goddess defeated, the world begins to heal as the companions part ways, and Sara’s spirit appears one last time in Wyndia.
