Summary

Banjo‑Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge brings the classic collect‑and‑explore formula to the Game Boy Advance in a crisp 2D overhead view, using pre‑rendered sprites that capture the series’ charm. The game revolves around gathering more than 750 items—golden musical notes, Jiggies, honeycombs, Jinjos, totems and coins—each feeding into a robust upgrade system where notes buy new moves from Bozzeye and totems unlock Mumbo Jumbo’s transformations into a mouse, tank, octopus or candle. Once Kazooie is rescued, she nests in Banjo’s backpack, unlocking a suite of seven extra abilities, including temporary flight, that open previously blocked paths. Every world culminates in an arena‑style showdown with Gruntilda or her minion Klungo, while optional minigames such as fishing, racing, target shooting and a hidden arcade cabinet add replay value. Development began in August 1999, originally as a Game Boy Color title called Grunty’s Curse, before evolving over four years into the GBA release we know today.

Storyline

Two months after Banjo and Kazooie defeat Gruntilda, her minion Klungo fails to move the boulder crushing her and instead builds a mechanical body for her spirit. The resulting Mecha‑Grunty kidnaps Kazooie and jumps twenty years into the past to stop the duo from ever meeting. Mumbo Jumbo uses magic to send Banjo back in time, where he meets Bozzeye, a relative of Bottles, who has a note from Mumbo asking for help. With Bozzeye and a younger Mumbo, Banjo rescues Kazooie and battles Mecha‑Grunty and Klungo repeatedly before reaching the still‑under‑construction Gruntilda’s Castle. They dismantle the robot, sending Gruntilda’s spirit back to her real body in the future, where she calls on her sisters for rescue.

The game offers two endings based on completion. In the standard ending Mumbo’s return spell misfires, creating multiple Banjo duplicates. If every Jiggy is collected, Banjo and Kazooie return safely and are celebrated by the Spiral Mountain residents with a card‑game gathering. As thegamesdb puts it, “Gruntilda is back, and it’s up to Banjo and Kazooie to stop her master plan.”
