Summary

Banjo‑Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge drops you back into the whimsical world of Banjo, this time on a handheld screen. The game shifts to a 2D overhead view, but it keeps the classic platforming spirit by letting you explore six distinct worlds filled with puzzles, obstacles, and enemy encounters.

You begin the adventure controlling only Banjo, who can walk, jump, crouch and swing his trusty backpack. By gathering golden musical notes you can buy new moves from Bozzeye, and once Kazooie is rescued she nests in the backpack, unlocking a suite of seven fresh abilities like temporary flight. The real fun kicks in when you hand over totems to Mumbo Jumbo, who transforms Banjo into a mouse, octopus, candle, tank and more, each form offering a quirky way to reach hidden areas.

Collectibles are the heart of the experience: musical notes, Jiggies, honeycombs, Jinjos, totems and coins add up to well over 750 items to track on the statistics screen. Finding every Jinjo rewards you with a Jiggy, which in turn opens new worlds.

Between platforming, the game sprinkles in minigames such as fishing, racing and target shooting, and each world culminates in an arena‑style showdown against Gruntilda or her henchman Klungo. The closing credits even hide an arcade cabinet where you can replay unlocked minigames for extra tokens.

All in all, Grunty's Revenge captures the charm of its console predecessors while delivering a portable adventure packed with variety and clever transformations.

Storyline

Banjo‑Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge takes place two months after Gruntilda’s defeat in the original Banjo‑Kazooie, positioning the events before Banjo‑Tooie. Trapped beneath a boulder, Gruntilda’s spirit is transferred into a Mecha‑Grunty robot built by her henchman Klungo when moving the rock proves impossible. From the mechanical body she kidnaps Kazooie and travels roughly twenty years into the past, hoping to stop the bear‑bird duo from ever meeting and erase her loss from history. Mumbo Jumbo’s magic sends Banjo back to the younger Spiral Mountain, where he meets Bozzeye, a relative of Bottles, and a younger Mumbo who help him rescue Kazooie. Together they battle Mecha‑Grunty and Klungo across several stages, eventually confronting the still‑under‑construction Gruntilda’s Castle, dismantling the robot and sending Gruntilda’s spirit back to her real body underground. The game features two endings: a standard one where a miscast spell creates duplicate Banjo copies, and a perfect‑completion ending where the heroes return home and celebrate with a card game.
