Summary
The GBA collection drops three iconic arcade legends—Asteroids, Pong, and Yars' Revenge—onto a single cartridge, letting handheld fans chase laser blasts, perfect ping‑pong paddles, and a quirky alien shooter in one go. In Yars' Revenge, you guide a fly‑like Yar across a single‑screen arena, chomping energy cells to carve a path through a shifting shield that guards the Qotile. Once a gap appears, you fire the Zorlon cannon from the left edge, aiming for a direct hit while dodging the Qotile’s guided missiles and swirling pinwheels known as swirls.
Each run grants you four lives, and scoring thresholds trigger more aggressive swirl behavior and color‑changing shield stages. The cartridge includes hardware‑switch options that tweak missile speed, swirl frequency, and even an "Ultimate Yars" mode where the cannon ricochets and you must collect trons for power. Originally a 1982 Atari hit, this version keeps the frantic pace but packs it with the portable convenience of the Game Boy Advance.
Storyline
Yars' Revenge follows the tragic rise of the Yars, a fly‑like humanoid race that evolved from ordinary houseflies after a crashed spaceship dumped radioactive dust across the Razak system. The mutation gave them the ability to devour any material and channel that energy into devastating projectiles capable of vaporizing solid rock, and they soon learned to fly freely through space, colonizing planets throughout the system.
While constructing the powerful Zorlon Cannon to defend their new worlds, the Yars were ambushed by the alien Qotile, who shattered Planet IV and forced the survivors into a neutral zone. The Qotile now hides behind an energy shield, launching missiles and "swirls" at the Yars. To strike back, the Yars must break the shield by devouring its cells or by making direct contact with the Qotile, triggering the incomplete Zorlon Cannon to unleash a decisive blast and avenge their lost home.
