Summary
Animaniacs: Lights, Camera, Action! showed up on the Game Boy Advance (and later the DS) as a frantic action title that tried to bottle the cartoon’s chaos. It turned out to be Warthog Games’ final project before the studio shut down in 2006. The game also marked the last official cameo of Yakko, Wakko and Dot until the 2020 series revival. A November 2005 NTSC release was listed in Nintendo’s database, but no cartridge ever appeared, suggesting a quiet cancellation.
Players navigate an isometric set, sprinting past cartoonish enemies, hunting keys, and solving simple puzzles to unlock doors. A director character appears throughout each level, handing out instructions like a behind‑the‑scenes briefing, and most stages end with a boss showdown. Swapping between the three siblings is done by finding a hidden “stage door” and winning a quick “polka dottie” mini‑game. You can’t die, but a rolling film strip counts down your time, and touching an enemy sends you back to the last director cue, giving the whole experience a frantic, on‑set vibe.
Critics were harsh: Metacritic gave the DS version a 39 and the GBA a 43, while GameRankings hovered in the mid‑40s for both. Reviewers complained about clunky controls and repetitive puzzles, saying the novelty of the license wore thin fast. Despite the scores, the title has become a quirky collector’s item, representing the end of an era for both the franchise and its developer. For retro hunters, it’s a curious footnote in Animaniacs history.
Storyline
The Animaniacs have caused mayhem and financial damages to Warner Bros. Studios, much to the annoyance of studio president Thaddeus Plotz. Rather than fire the mischievous trio, Plotz comes up with a different plan. In the game Animaniacs: Lights, Camera, Action! the president assigns the Animaniacs the task of producing three movies. He hopes the revenue from those films will be enough to repair the studio’s financial woes. The storyline revolves around the chaotic filmmaking adventure the characters embark on to save the studio.
