Summary
Crash Bandicoot: Fusion and Spyro: Fusion are a quirky GBA double‑feature that tosses the classic platformers into a minigame‑heavy playground. Instead of the usual isometric view, both titles run side‑scroll, letting you guide Crash or Spyro through five hub worlds where each portal opens a bite‑sized challenge rather than a traditional level. Your usual jumps, double‑jumps and signature attacks still work, but the real progress comes from collecting Wumpa fruit or gems to unlock those portals, then racking up Power Crystals and Clear Gems by beating the games under time pressure.
The games even let you take the fun to a link‑up party: up to four GBA systems can share the unlocked minigames in a multiplayer "Party Mode," and a hidden set of 167 trading cards can be earned, traded, or won for tiny bonuses and extra characters. Development was a Vicarious Visions effort built on a 128‑megabit cartridge—double the size of a typical GBA title—under the creative direction of Kathy Carter and with audio from Shin’en Multimedia. The art team kept each franchise’s look distinct, even re‑using the fan‑favorite Nina Cortex from earlier Crash concepts.
Critics were split. Crash’s side of the package earned praise for its more varied and challenging minigames, while Spyro’s offering felt simpler and less engaging. Both suffered from short overall length—about two hours of play—and a trading‑card system that never quite lived up to its hype, but the sheer variety of minigames and the novelty of a crossover kept the experience memorable for anyone who grew up with these mascots.
Storyline
Doctor Neo Cortex and Ripto join forces, genetically altering Ripto’s Riptoc army to look like Crash and Spyro. Their scheme uses warp pads and portals to steal Power Crystals, creating chaos in both Wumpa Jungle and the Dragon Castles. Aku Aku and Coco warn Crash about strange orange creatures invading the jungle, while the Professor and Hunter alert Spyro to the same portal disturbances in his realm. The heroes set out separately, each believing the other is the enemy. When Crash and Spyro finally meet, they clash in a brief battle before realizing they’ve been duped. After the mix‑up, they agree to work together, with Coco and the Professor providing support. They split up: Crash tackles Cortex’s minion Tiny Tiger, while Spyro confronts Ripto’s henchmen Crush and Gulp. Their success irritates the villains, who summon Cortex’s niece Nina to speed things up. Nina kidnaps Coco and the Professor, destroying their portal research, forcing the duo to rescue them. Coco devises a plan to place a tracer on the villains, and Crash distracts Nina while Spyro frees their friends. Spyro later tags Cortex, revealing a hidden base in outer space. Crash and Spyro storm the base, defeat Cortex and Ripto, and foil their world‑conquering plot. The heroes celebrate, confirming their alliance for any future threats in the 2 in 1 – Spyro Fusion & Crash Bandicoot Fusion (Rising Sun).
