Summary

The Famicom Disk System got its own Super Mario Bros. in early 1986, a floppy‑disk version that arrived a year after the original NES hit. This Japanese release isn’t just a straight copy; it carries a slightly upgraded graphics set and the alternate physics that later appeared in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, giving the familiar jumps a subtly different feel. A quirky promotional spin‑off called All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. also landed on the Disk System, swapping enemies and power‑ups for caricatures of popular radio personalities while keeping the same visual tweaks. The most infamous quirk, however, is the Minus World bug. On the Disk System it spawns three hidden, fully playable stages: “World ‑1,” an underwater remix of 1‑3 with its own palette and music; “World ‑2,” a clone of 7‑3; and “World ‑3,” a copy of 4‑4 that uses underground graphics and doesn’t loop. After beating any of these, Toad’s congratulatory line appears—minus Toad himself—then the game jumps to the title screen as if you’d finished, unlocking a harder‑mode replay.

Storyline

Following the events of Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. on the Famicom Disk System takes place in the fantasy Mushroom Kingdom after Mario and Luigi arrive through a clay pipe from New York City. A tribe of turtle‑like Koopa Troopas invades, using Bowser’s magic to turn the Mushroom People into inanimate objects such as bricks, stones, and horsehair plants.

Bowser also kidnaps Princess Toadstool, the only one who can reverse the spell. Hearing the news, the brothers set out to rescue her and free the kingdom, battling Bowser’s forces across the land. After each defeat of a decoy Bowser, a Toad retainer declares, “Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!”

At last they reach Bowser’s true stronghold, where they defeat him either by hurling fireballs or by dropping him into lava with an axe. The princess is freed and the Mushroom Kingdom is saved.
