Summary

Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami, the original Japanese incarnation of what Western fans know as Kid Icarus, first appeared on the Famicom Disk System in late 1986. It was a joint effort between Nintendo’s R&D1 team and the often‑unsung studio Tose, a partnership that gave the game its distinctive blend of mythic atmosphere and tight platforming. Because it launched exclusively in Japan on December 19, the disk‑based title became a collector’s curiosity for anyone outside the country, especially after the FDS itself faded from the market. The game’s mythic setting, drawn from Greek legend, set a tone that would echo through later Nintendo adventures, even as the original disks grew scarcer. Today, the title lives on in memory and in the occasional retro‑gaming showcase, reminding us how a modest disk‑based release could spark a lasting franchise.

Storyline

Hikari Shinwa – Palthena no Kagami (known in the West as Kid Icarus) opens in the far‑flung kingdom of Angel Land. The malevolent goddess Medusa has seized the Three Sacred Treasures and locked the goddess of light, Palutena, away in the Palace in the Sky. As the heroic Kid Icarus, you set out to recover the stolen relics, battle Medusa’s minions, and free Palutena. Each dungeon brings you closer to the hidden treasures and the final confrontation with Medusa herself. Victory restores Palutena’s light and returns peace to Angel Land.
