Summary

Final Commando – the FDS edition known in Japan as ファイナルコマンド 赤い要塞 (Final Command: Red Fortress) drops you into a frantic rescue mission. Your only ally is an all‑terrain attack jeep packed with guided missiles and incendiary grenades, while enemy fire comes from cannons, tanks, submarines, snipers and even low‑flying jet fighters. Because the game lives on a disk card, the levels are limited to short vertical scrolls with different layouts than the later cartridge version. The first stage is called Checkpoint Baker; the original lacks the opening Checkpoint Alpha and the final Checkpoint Zulu contains no hostages to free. These constraints give the FDS release a faster, more relentless pace that fans still talk about.

Storyline

In Final Commando: Akai Yousai (often just called Final Commando), the player leads the Jackal unit, an elite squad of four hardened soldiers. The team consists of Colonel Decker, Lieutenant Bob, Sergeant Quint and Corporal Grey, each trained to survive any environment. Their mission is simple yet perilous: drive two armed jeeps deep into hostile territory. Once inside, they must locate and rescue captured prisoners of war, then extract them safely back to friendly lines. The game’s tension comes from balancing firepower, navigation, and the constant threat of enemy forces while protecting the rescued POWs.
