Summary
Dig Dug II swaps the original’s side‑scroll tunnels for a bright overhead island maze, turning the familiar digging action into a strategic slice‑and‑dice of land. From a bird’s‑eye view you can see the whole island, its winding coastlines and the little fault lines waiting to be broken.
Red‑goggled Pookas and fire‑breathing Fygars still chase Taizo Hori, but now you have two tools: an air pump that inflates foes until they pop, and a jackhammer that cracks the ground along pre‑marked fault lines. When you open a fault, the surrounding piece of island can sink into the sea, taking any enemies – and an unwary player – with it.
The deeper the cut, the bigger the point haul, especially when a whole section disappears in one go. After three land pieces have been isolated, a bonus vegetable sprouts somewhere on the remaining terrain, offering a tasty extra‑point boost.
When only a handful of enemies survive, they panic, sprint to the edge and leap into the water, ending the round in a splashy finale.
The Famicom Disk System got its own Dig Dug II cartridge in Japan in 1990, preserving this quirky island‑shattering twist for home consoles.
Storyline
In Dig Dug II, the iconic hero finally decides to escape the daily grind by vacationing on a sun‑kissed Caribbean island. While lounging in a hammock beneath swaying palms, he imagines a perfect getaway filled with surf, sand, and even bikini‑clad native girls catering to his every whim. The peace is short‑lived, however, as his old foes Pooka and Fygar crash the party, turning the tropical paradise into a chaotic nightmare. Players must guide Dig Dug across the island’s colorful terrain, blasting the pesky intruders and restoring the serene beach atmosphere. The goal is simple: clear the island of these irritating pests and bring the vacation back to its blissful, carefree state.
