Summary

Akuu Senki Raijin (sometimes called Akara Senki Raijin) is a vertical‑scrolling mecha shooter that lets you flip between a hulking robot and a sleek starfighter on the fly. The transformation isn’t just cosmetic – at certain points you can land the mecha, hop onto the ground and discover hidden routes that continue as a side‑scrolling space segment, blending two classic shoot‑'em‑up styles in one run. Developed by Micro Cabin and released under Square’s DOG label for the Famicom Disk System, it turned out to be one of the last titles Square put out for the disk format before shifting entirely to cartridge games. The dual‑mode mechanic feels like a love letter to Square’s earlier Thexder, but with a fresh, high‑speed twist.
