Summary

Air Fortress is a quirky blend of side‑scrolling shooter and maze‑exploration that still feels fresh decades later. In the opening Air Base you pilot a lightship, dodging enemy craft and floating station debris while hunting for limited "crash beam" ammo and energy pickups; you only get three tries to reach the Air Lock, and a single hit sends you back to the start in the Japanese version, whereas the American release simply respawns you at the point of death if you have lives left.

Once inside the titular fortress the game shifts gears entirely. You wander through a sprawling, often confusing layout, blasting robots and security drones with a beam weapon, hunting the central core, and then racing against a ticking timer as the whole structure erupts. The exit never lines up with where you entered, so the final escape feels like a frantic sprint.

HAL Laboratory’s hidden nod to director Hiroaki Suga appears as the password "SUGA" for the last fortress, and the soundtrack’s composer Hideki Kanazashi is credited under quirky aliases in each region. HAL America even ran a mail‑order campaign that tossed a free T‑shirt to buyers.

Critics at the time praised the smooth scrolling, lack of flicker, and the daring mix of genres, though they noted the music could get repetitive and the difficulty ramps up sharply after the first fortress. Retrospective looks remain split, admiring the ambitious design while questioning the visual polish and steep learning curve.

Storyline

In Air Fortress (Proto) for the Famicom Disk System, the planet Farmel has just mastered space travel and begins to explore the galaxy. Their excitement turns to terror when a swarm of massive "Air Fortresses" appears, moving like interstellar locusts that devour resources and life wherever they go. The Space Federation launches its strongest fleet, only to see it annihilated by the relentless fortresses. As a last desperate measure, they dispatch a lone warrior, Hal Bailman, equipped with a shielded spacesuit, powerful weapons, and a tiny lightship.
Hal’s mission is to slip inside the enemy citadels and destroy them from within, hoping to halt the planetary‑devouring menace and save Farmel’s fledgling space age.
