Summary
Warbirds, Atari’s handheld WWI dogfight on the Lynx, drops you into a first‑person cockpit where you can scan forward, rearward and the sky for enemy biplanes. The title lets you tweak ammo, durability and flight style before each of its five scenarios, and a four‑button layout makes the aerial combat feel surprisingly smooth for a pocket system. Its biggest claim‑to‑play is the ComLynx link: up to four Lynx units can link together for frenetic multiplayer dogfights, a feature that wowed reviewers at the 1991 Winter CES. Designer Robert Zdybel, who originally called the project Red Baron, saw the game praised for its pseudo‑3D graphics, crisp sound and addictive multiplayer, even as the single‑player mode received milder notes. Scores ranging from 84/100 in Computer and Video Games to 9/10 on IGN reflect the lasting impression Warbirds made on handheld combat fans.
Storyline
Warbirds drops you into the 1910s, the height of World War I. As a fresh‑off‑the‑training‑field pilot in the Army Air Force, you’re assigned to the eponymous squadron and given a ready‑made biplane. The game presents the action from a first‑person cockpit view, putting you right in the pilot’s seat.
Your mission is simple but deadly: fly over the battle‑scarred skies, locate enemy aircraft, and shoot them down. Each successful kill pushes the Allied effort closer to victory, and the ultimate goal is to win the war for your side.
