Summary

The Fidelity Ultimate Chess Challenge brings the Chessmaster 2100 engine to the Lynx, handling all the classic rules you’d expect—en passant, castling, check, checkmate and a variety of draw conditions. You can set optional move‑time limits and even dial in how long the CPU thinks before it moves, while a press of the B button may offer a hint, though it’s a bit of a gamble. The game also supports head‑to‑head play, letting two people alternate moves on the same handheld.

Visually, the title pushes the Lynx’s color screen with a striking 3D board that you can flip to an overhead view for that final assault. On‑screen statistics keep track of scores, elapsed times and move counts, and a review mode lets you scroll back through the game at any point.

What really sets this handheld apart is the Fidelity‑lab‑crafted engine, the only USCF‑certified Master‑rated (2325) program available on a portable device at the time, making it arguably the fastest and most powerful color chess computer you could carry in your pocket.
