Summary
Switchblade II on the Atari Lynx delivers a tight side‑scrolling run‑and‑gun experience, using the handheld’s d‑pad and two action buttons for movement and firing. The six stages are split into distinct sections rather than a continuous scroll, giving each area a clear start and finish.
Scattered portals open up tiny shops where you can spend enemy‑dropped orbs on a quirky arsenal – from a basic knife to homing missiles, laser beams, flamethrowers and even shurikens. Ammunition is also purchasable, encouraging you to balance firepower with the limited currency you collect.
Some levels hide interconnected subterranean bases that stay concealed until you find the right entry point, rewarding exploration beyond the main path. The Lynx version was ported by Optimus Software, debuted at SCES ’92 and was released by Atari Corporation in both North America and Europe, earning a mixed critical response compared to its Amiga predecessor.
Storyline
Switchblade II on the Atari Lynx continues the saga several centuries after the original game. The story follows Hiro, a descendant of the first hero, as he sets out to stop the resurrected villain Havok, who seeks to unleash chaos across Cyberworld. In this version it is hinted that the original Hiro survived his first battle, granted immortality after defeating Havok 200 years earlier, only to face the villain’s renewed threat.
Hiro must battle through six distinct levels teeming with mechanoid, metal‑clad enemies, each designed to test his resolve. The ultimate goal is to finally end Havok’s menace once and for all, bringing peace back to the cyber‑future.
