Summary

Super Off Road captures the raw excitement of off‑road racing, throwing mud holes, jumps and other obstacles onto tight indoor tracks that feel ripped straight from the arcade. Endorsed by real‑life off‑road legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, the game lets you grind dirt at high gear while battling up to three friends or the computer.

What set the title apart back then was its early upgrade system: every win earned cash you could spend on better trucks or nitro, a mechanic dreamed up by lead designer John Morgan. Even the CPU drivers wore the names of the development crew – Sam Powell, Earl Stratton and John Morgan – a clever way to sidestep licensing fees. The Track Pak add‑on later expanded the arena with eight fresh courses and a dune buggy option, keeping the competition fresh.

The Atari Lynx port, however, never lived up to the arcade’s smooth action. Reviewers at Electronic Gaming Monthly slammed its choppy scrolling, handing it a meager 3.75‑out‑of‑10 and calling it almost unplayable. Still, the handheld version remains a curious footnote in the game’s otherwise celebrated legacy.
