Summary
Steel Talons landed on the Atari Lynx as a faithful handheld translation of Atari’s 3‑D combat helicopter arcade hit. The game keeps the original’s flat‑shaded polygon graphics, driven by the same TMS34010‑based graphics processor that powered the cabinet, so even on a tiny screen the AT1196 Steel Talons helicopter feels solid and three‑dimensional.
In the Lynx version you still pilot the armed chopper with a machine gun, rockets and a handful of air‑to‑surface guided missiles, tackling the same 19‑mission campaign that the arcade offered in both solo and cooperative play. A competitive mode also lets two players battle each other’s helicopters, preserving the head‑to‑head excitement of the original.
While the arcade’s joystick, collective lever and rudder pedals are impossible to replicate, the handheld maps those controls onto the Lynx’s button layout and even includes the “real heli mode” that makes flying tougher but grants extra maneuverability—just like the cabinet’s optional setting.
Critics praised the game’s use of 3‑D technology, awarding it high scores and nominating it for an innovation award, and the Lynx port was singled out for delivering a surprisingly deep flight experience on a portable system.
