Summary

Rygar – Legendary Warrior lets you sprint across side‑scrolling stages, jumping, ducking and climbing ropes while wielding the Diskarmor, a razor‑sharp shield that spins like a yo‑yo and can be thrown forward. Your attacks range from a basic forward swing to a curved overhead slash and an airborne strike, and you can even stun foes by hopping on them, but a single touch from an enemy or projectile ends the run instantly—there’s no health bar to fall back on.

Scattered throughout each level are five types of collectibles: points, extra lives, time extensions, screen‑bombs that wipe out every enemy, and power‑ups that temporarily boost abilities. Power‑ups include Sun (straight overhead attack), Crown (multi‑kill), Cross (invincibility), Tiger (jump‑kill), and Star (longer Diskarmor reach), and rare question‑marks transform into one of these when struck.

A ticking clock adds pressure; linger too long and a fire monster appears, chasing you faster the longer you evade it. When you finally reach a stage’s safe zone, your score is tallied.

The Atari Lynx port trims the arcade’s roster to 23 rounds, reshuffles some layouts, and holds back the upward shield throw until you earn the proper power‑up. The final boss swells dramatically in size and toughness, and the handheld version sprinkles extra opening and closing text to flesh out Rygar’s backstory.

Storyline

Rygar - Legendary Warrior opens with a mythic prologue: after 4.5 billion years since Earth’s birth, countless dominators have risen and fallen, only to be eclipsed by time itself. A new tyrant, the lion‑headed monster Ligar, now rules the land of Argool, having seized power from the long‑peaceful kings who once defended the realm. The game’s manual tells us that a wizard once banished the “minions of darkness” to the underworld, but before dying he warned that darkness would return and that a hero marked by the “Mark of the Wizard” would be needed.

In the Lynx version, after ten thousand years of oppression the prophesied hero awakens: Rygar, a dead warrior risen from his grave, wielding his Diskarmor and a host of other weapons. He journeys through stone green temples, receiving cryptic guidance from sage‑like figures, and battles Ligar’s forces across the devastated kingdom. The climax takes place in a grand throne room where Rygar confronts Ligar and defeats him.

The ending celebrates the victory: a crowd hails Rygar as the “mighty warrior” who has restored peace to Argool, with the text proclaiming, “All hail the mighty warrior Rygar… Bravo Rygar, hero of Argool.” Yet the closing line hints that a resurrected threat may rise again, leaving the world’s future uncertain.
