Summary

Atari brought Paperboy to the Lynx handheld in 1990, translating the arcade’s isometric bike‑delivery chaos onto a tiny screen. The port kept the core mechanic of tossing papers at moving houses, but the limited hardware meant the once‑vibrant streets looked a bit flatter and the sound effects were reduced to simple blips.

Critics were split: some praised the clear, colorful graphics and faithful recreation of the original’s quirky charm, while others felt the gameplay had become a repetitive shoot‑em‑up‑style routine lacking the arcade’s punch. Reviewers noted the sound and music as merely average, and the overall experience was described as decent but not a highlight of the Lynx library.

Despite the mixed reception, Paperboy has endured, appearing in later arcade collections like Midway Arcade Treasures and even popping up in Lego Dimensions, proving that the paper‑throwing bike rider still has a place in retro gaming nostalgia.

Storyline

In Paperboy for the Atari Lynx, you play as a paperboy delivering the fictional Daily Sun to suburban homes across an American neighborhood. Your goal is to toss the paper onto porches or into mailboxes while dodging traffic, dogs, and other hazards that line the street.

The cartridge also includes a “Special Delivery” mode where the rider is saving up his wages to buy a new game console. Along the way he meets a love interest, and the romance shifts his deliveries from newspapers to roses.
