Summary

Ninja Gaiden on the Atari Lynx feels like a portable Double‑Dragon, with the ninja sprinting left‑to‑right and clearing each screen only after every foe falls. You can string together punches, kicks and a handful of special Ninjutsu moves, and you’ll occasionally pick up a sword that lasts for a limited number of swings.

The combat is surprisingly fluid: besides bare‑handed attacks you can launch a flying neck throw, execute a back‑flip that turns into an offensive strike, or hang from overhead bars to deliver a kick. Tossing enemies into telephone booths, oil drums or dumpsters shatters the objects and drops health packs or extra swords, while a five‑segment life bar tracks your stamina.

Each stage is set in a recognizable American locale—Las Vegas, North Carolina, Los Angeles, the Grand Canyon and Brooklyn—populated by masked thugs, Jason‑Voorhees look‑alikes and a distinct boss at the end of the level. The environments add a gritty, urban flavor that matches the arcade’s original vibe.

A two‑player co‑op lets a friend join in as the orange‑clad ninja, and when you lose you’re met with a grim continue screen of your character chained to a table beneath a descending circular saw. The Lynx version was programmed from scratch by BlueSky Software, translating the arcade’s fast‑paced action into a handheld format.

Storyline

In Ninja Gaiden for the Atari Lynx, you play as a ninja recruited by the United States government. Your mission is to stop an ominous cult headed by Bladedamus, a descendant of Nostradamus who is intent on fulfilling his apocalyptic prophecies. Bladedamus has unleashed a wave of criminals from Alcatraz, turning the streets into chaos, and has even kidnapped the President. He also secured the launch codes for the nation’s ICBMs, raising the stakes to a potential world‑ending crisis. The ninja must battle through the turmoil to thwart the cult’s plan and restore order.
