Summary
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom feels like a love‑letter to the series, even on the tiny Lynx screen. I was instantly drawn in by the tight side‑scrolling action where Ryu can jump, cling to overhead pipes or ivy, and even scale walls, all while a life meter warns you when a slip could be fatal. The power‑up system shines: red and blue capsules refill ninja power, scrolls raise your maximum, and sword upgrades—like the Windmill Throwing Stars or the Dragon Spirit Sword—give a satisfying sense of progression. Crystal balls drop items, and recovery medicine bottles keep the health meter ticking.
Atari’s 1993 port earned kudos for surprisingly crisp sprites and responsive controls, making every boss fight against the element‑themed bio‑noids feel rewarding. The only real letdown was the compressed sound and the limited view — the Lynx’s small screen can hide foes and pickups until it’s almost too late. Still, the handheld manages to capture the series’ brutal elegance, and I keep it tucked away for quick bursts of nostalgia.
Storyline
In Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom the story picks up after the original game and before Ninja Gaiden II. CIA agent Irene Lew is pursued by a Ryu look‑alike, falls off a cliff and is presumed dead, prompting Ryu to investigate the laboratory where she died. A mysterious figure directs him to the ruined Castle Rock fortress, where he receives a video message from A. Foster who claims ignorance of Irene’s fate.
Ryu soon meets Clancy, who explains that Foster has been creating "bio‑noids"—super‑human soldiers infused with life energy from an interdimensional rift opened after the demon’s defeat. Foster plans to turn Ryu into a bio‑noid, but the look‑alike transforms first and is defeated. A rift opens, Clancy reveals the ruins are actually a dimensional warship called the Ancient Ship of Doom, and Foster is destroyed by the rift’s energy. Ryu enters subspace, battles a resurrected, stronger look‑alike, and emerges back in the real world.
Clancy shows the ship materializing, fires a test shot, and offers Ryu a place beside him to purge humanity. Ryu refuses, defeats the bio‑noid Clancy, and watches as the Ancient Ship of Doom explodes while the sunrise signals a new beginning for him and Irene.
