Summary
The unreleased Atari Lynx prototype of Eye of the Beholder feels like a pocket‑sized tribute to classic first‑person dungeon crawlers. It drops you into a maze of thirteen levels where battle‑axe‑wielding skeletons, snarling flinds, electric Kuo‑Toa and lurking giant spiders stalk the corridors, all leading up to the titular Beholder that watches from the shadows. You start with a four‑person party, using a point‑and‑click interface to swing swords and cast spells, and you can swell the group to six by resurrecting fallen skeletons or recruiting wandering NPCs you encounter. The pseudo‑3D visuals were painted in Deluxe Paint, and the audio boasts over 150 Adlib sound effects, giving the handheld version a surprisingly rich atmosphere despite never seeing an official release.
Storyline
In Eye of the Beholder (Proto) for the Atari Lynx, the lords of Waterdeep commission a band of adventurers to root out a growing evil beneath the city. The party slips into the sewers, only to have the entrance collapse under the influence of Xanathar, the titular beholder. Pressed onward, they navigate hostile dwarf and drow enclaves before finally confronting Xanathar in his hidden lair. After a tense battle, the beholder falls and a brief blue‑tinted screen confirms its death. The heroes emerge back to the surface, greeted as celebrated saviors of Waterdeep.
