Summary
Chip's Challenge first hit gamers as a launch title for the Atari Lynx, a compact handheld that demanded a tight ten‑week sprint to finish development. Chuck Sommerville built a crude Apple II prototype to nail the game’s logic, then hand‑crafted roughly a third of the 148 levels before his team at Epyx filled in the rest. The puzzle‑filled maze of buttons, water, and lethal monsters proved instantly addictive, and the Windows Entertainment Pack bundles later exposed the title to a far larger audience.
Conversion work was largely delegated to Images Software in the UK, preserving the tile‑based charm across a mishmash of platforms while the Microsoft Windows version received its own separate treatment. Each level rewards fast thinking, offering time‑limited challenges that can be skipped with a four‑letter password and automatically saved on PC. After years of nostalgia‑fuelled demand, the game resurfaced on Steam in 2015 alongside Chip's Challenge 2, a sequel that finally untangled its trademark woes and reaffirmed its status as a puzzle classic.
Storyline
Chip's Challenge on the Atari Lynx follows high‑school nerd Chip McCallahan, who bumps into Melinda the Mental Marvel in the school science lab.
She challenges him to prove his worth by traversing her “Clubhouse,” a maze of increasingly tough puzzles. Each room tests Chip’s logic, timing and reflexes as he works toward the ultimate goal. Success means earning a spot in the exclusive Bit Busters Club, the elite group of puzzle‑solvers at the school. The game’s narrative is simple but drives the player through the escalating challenges.
