Summary

The Jaguar version of Syndicate feels like a faithful shadow of its 3DO sibling, keeping the same isometric cityscapes and level layouts while swapping out the soundtrack and button‑highlight colors. The mini‑map mirrors the original DOS look but borrows the 3DO’s palette, and unlike any other port the mouse cursor actually moves across it, giving a tiny tactical edge. All the cinematic video clips are gone, replaced by a single static image that loops during the intro, which feels oddly nostalgic. Reviewers were split: Electronic Gaming Monthly praised it as the strongest console adaptation yet lamented the Jaguar’s number‑pad controls, GamePro loved the abundance of buttons but warned of a hard‑to‑read HUD and occasional slowdown, while Next Generation declared it the closest you can get to the PC experience without a mouse, highlighting its gritty gore and oppressive vibe. The core gameplay stays true—manage a squad of cyber‑enhanced agents, juggle taxation, research new weapons and upgrades, and keep a tight grip on territories before they revolt.

Storyline

The backstory of Syndicate, as detailed in the game’s manual, paints a near‑future cyber‑punk world in 2096 where multinational megacorporations have supplanted governments. One such megacorp, EuroCorp, creates the CHIP—a neck‑implanted device that dulls a person’s perception of misery and makes them vulnerable to corporate suggestion. Corruption turns these megacorps into rival crime syndicates battling for CHIP production and population control.

Players assume control of a self‑named corporation, commanding up to four cyborg agents who were once ordinary civilians captured, enhanced, and reprogrammed. Missions range from assassinations and infiltrations to theft and "persuasion" using a Persuadertron that can seize important figures or turn crowds into cannon fodder. New agents can be recruited to replace those killed or injured, but losing the entire squad triggers a game‑over as the corporation’s airship self‑destructs.

The campaign unfolds territory by territory, crushing rivals such as The Tao, Sphinx Inc., and The Castrilos while quelling internal mutinies. The climax occurs at the Atlantic Accelerator research station, where the squad fends off endless waves of enemy agents, securing a new empire that spans the globe.
