Summary

Iron Soldier drops you into the cockpit of a massive 42‑foot mech and lets you tweak every weapon slot—shoulders, hips, even the fists—before heading out on 16 missions grouped in fours. I love the feeling of swapping rocket launchers for a chainsaw on the fly, then watching the on‑screen ammo gauges and radar flicker as you blast through polygon‑filled factories and wrecking‑ball‑heavy enemy bots.

The game runs a steady 30 fps despite buildings using up to 200 polygons, thanks to clever level‑of‑detail tricks that drop detail when you pull back. Eclipse’s custom engine—born from a cancelled Falcon space title—delivers a truly destructible arena, letting you slam tanks, topple houses or reroute a defense shield in real time. The advanced control mode even lets the robot move one way while you look another, a small but huge freedom for a 1994 release.

Originally slated for online play via a Jaguar modem that never materialized, the single‑player experience still feels massive, and modern fans still hail it as one of the console’s best‑crafted shooters.

Storyline

Iron Soldier drops you into a bleak, industrial future where the Iron Fist Corporation has seized control of governments worldwide. The IFC rules with a massive, piloted war machine called the Iron Soldier, a 42‑foot robot designed to keep the urban population in line. A fledgling resistance manages to steal a prototype of this behemoth and turns it against its makers. As the resistance pilot, you commandeer the stolen Iron Soldier and strike at the heart of the dictatorship.

Your missions vary from blowing up strategic targets and destroying enemy Iron Soldiers to defending hidden bases and escorting supply convoys. Each objective pushes you deeper into IFC territory, forcing you to dismantle the corporation's grip on the planet. The game’s narrative is driven by the desperate fight to overthrow the global military regime and restore freedom to an industrialized Earth.
