Summary
Checkered Flag drops you into a 3‑D Formula One world where you can pick from ten high‑performance tracks and flip through six camera angles as you chase the finish line. Before each race you can tweak the car’s colour, tires, gear ratios, airfoil and even summon rain or sunshine – and a hidden cheat unlocks a night‑time weather mode for extra drama. The game offers three solo modes: a quick Single Race, a time‑trial Free Practice, and a ten‑track Tournament that pits you against five AI opponents, but it never gave us a two‑player split‑screen. The action feels like a love‑letter to Virtua Racing, with the Jaguar’s modest hardware sometimes stumbling on frame‑rate and controls, yet the track variety and weather tweaks keep the experience fresh.
Developed by Rebellion as a Jaguar‑only conversion of their 1991 Lynx title, Checkered Flag was built on a shoestring budget and ended up as a single‑player showcase rather than a full simulation. Critics praised its customization and track selection but noted the visual and audio shortcomings, and sales hovered around twenty‑thousand units. Years later the community released the source code, and a remastered Steam version now adds eighteen tracks, save‑states, controller remapping and image scaling, letting modern players finally feel the wind in their hair without the original’s technical limits.
