Summary
Attack of the Mutant Penguins (often just called Mutant Penguins) stands out as an early Atari Jaguar hybrid that mixes frantic top‑down action with puzzle‑like strategy. I love how the game lets you pick Bernard or Rodney, each equipped with quirky powers such as Electrify, Boomerang or even a Samurai slash, and then recruit tiny Gremlin workers to jam locks on treasure chests for bonus weapons and extra lives. The 20‑stage core (expanded to 30 in the DOS edition) is peppered with hidden power orbs, trap‑laying options like dynamite and glue‑sticks, and an endless “Pandemonium” mode that throws wave after wave of alien penguins at you.
The development story is equally interesting: Sunrise Games built it in collaboration with Atari’s new European studio, co‑produced by Alistair Bodin and Darryl Still, without chasing Jaguar hardware gimmicks. It shipped in late 1995 Europe, hit North America early the next year, and later became one of the last Jaguar titles before the Atari–JTS merger.
Critics praised the colorful graphics, witty humor and clever level design, though they noted rough music tracks and occasional control quirks. A 1996 DOS port later resurfaced on Steam in 2021, letting a new generation experience this off‑beat classic.
Storyline
In Attack of the Mutant Penguins you take the roles of Bernard and Rodney, two intergalactic heroes tasked with defending Earth from a bizarre alien invasion. The invaders have disguised themselves as penguins after watching nature‑television shows, believing the birds to be the planet’s dominant species. Their plan centers on a massive weighing‑scale weapon called the Doomscale, which will trigger destruction when the alien penguins outweigh the native ones. Your mission is to stop the mutants before they reach the Doomscale or a transformation station that turns them into heavier forms.
The game plays as a humorous arcade‑style strategy where each wave of tough‑nut mutants threatens the peaceful tranquility of the world. Real penguins rally to your side, fighting tooth‑and‑nail and helping to balance the scale. You can also collect little worker gremlins and place them in treasure‑chest locks to unlock bonuses. The challenge is to out‑wit the marauding mutants and prevent the lethal Doomscale from activating.
Success means keeping the alien weight below the threshold, preserving Earth’s tranquility, and earning the gratitude of both the heroic penguins and the quirky gremlins. The quirky tone and quirky allies make the battle feel light‑hearted despite the looming threat.
