Summary
Tower Toppler (also known as Nebulus) drops you into a series of cylindrical towers that seem to spin as you walk left or right, giving a surprisingly deep sense of rotation on the Atari 7800. Each level is a vertical climb where stairs can be slippery, ledges may crumble, and massive boulders or giant eyes roll down to crush you if you’re not careful. Enemies are mostly simple geometric shapes; some can be shot, while others are completely immune, and a single touch sends you tumbling to the next lower ledge—or straight into the sea below if there’s nothing to catch you. The goal is to reach the top, trigger the tower’s weak spot, and watch the whole structure explode before hopping into a waiting submarine for a bonus stage where you can shoot fish for extra points. Every new tower ramps up the challenge, adding tougher obstacles like indestructible mutant molecules and tighter platforms, so one misstep means a plunge back to the depths.
Storyline
Tower Toppler, known in some regions as Nebulus, follows the green creature Pogo on a desperate mission to save his home planet. A poisonous ocean threatens the over‑populated world, and the only cure lies in destroying eight massive towers that keep the water toxic. Pogo must climb each tower, plant a bomb at its peak and slip through a door that triggers the tower’s self‑destruct mechanism. After each demolition he hops into his submarine and, in certain versions, enters a bonus stage where he can blast fish for extra points. By toppling all eight alien relics, the lethal grip on the water is broken and the planet’s seas can return to their natural, harmless state.
