Summary
When Atari launched Scrapyard Dog for the 7800 in 1990, it stood out with a bright, scrolling platform presentation that pushed the console’s graphic and sound limits. Players blaze through 17 distinct stages, each packed with quirky hazards and surprises that keep the pace lively. Reviewers noted the game’s razor‑sharp visual style, though they also warned that some jumps feel unforgivingly tough—a complaint echoed in retro scores like GamePro’s 19/25 and an overall 3.5 / 5 from Atari 7800 Forever. Despite the steep difficulty, the sheer variety of enemies and environmental tricks keeps even seasoned platform fans coming back for more. The title remains a cult‑favorite for anyone chasing a hardcore 7800 challenge.
Storyline
Scrapyard Dog puts you in the shoes of Louie, a junkyard worker whose loyal dog Scraps has been dognapped by the criminal mastermind Mr. Big. Across sixteen timed checkpoints, Louie must battle through gritty back‑alley stages filled with gangsters, rats and mice. He can toss bombs and canned objects at foes, and deploy shields for brief protection as he races toward each checkpoint. The clock ticks down on every segment, forcing the player to balance aggression with speed. Reaching the final checkpoint rescues Scraps and ends Mr. Big’s reign of terror.
