Summary

Rampart is best known as an arcade strategy hit, but it also lives in a shadowy form on the Atari 7800. The console version never saw an official release and the only build that circulates is a rough, unfinished prototype that skips a proper title screen and shows placeholder graphics. It runs only with a two‑button 7800 joystick, letting you pick difficulty, player count and game mode (single, two‑player, team or competition) before the action starts. During play you fire at the enemy’s "NME" icons with the left button, while the right button acts as a screen‑clear that wipes all targets at once, and both players can shoot simultaneously in the multiplayer variants. A handful of background tiles change depending on the selected mode. The half‑finished ROM was unearthed by Curt Vendel and later polished into a playable cartridge by hobbyists Robert DeCrescenzo, Mitchell Orman and Eckhard Stolberg; internal Atari memos from 1993 even label the build as "almost finalized," hinting that a more complete version may still be hidden somewhere.
